Over €500,000 were invested almost entirely by the Chinese Government in an extensive refurbishment of the Mediterranean Regional Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Kordin.
Director General of the Department of Science and Technology , Chinas’ State of Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mrs Su, said that this is another happy moment in the healthy relationship between the two countries. She said that this centre is providing treatment to a good number of Maltese patients by using the services of several Chinese doctors who come to Malta for two years of service. Currently the service is being delivered by a team of four Chinese doctors.
Dr Ray Busuttil, Superintendent for Public Health said that over the years there has been a constant improvement in the service delivered. He also praised the current team of doctors and their predecessors for the dedication with which they deliver their services.
Minister for Health, the Elderly and Community Care, Hon Joe Cassar said that the Centre is the landmark of the co-operation between the Maltese Ministry and the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China and that it highlights the good relationship that exists between these two countries.
“During my visit to China in September I was able to get first hand experience of the product of the co-operation between the two countries. I realised that although our two countries are far away from each other and our size is very different, our people shared common principles and values in the treatment and management of patients. I could see first hand the very effective complementary co-existence of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine in the management of a variety of clinical conditions ranging from the management and treatment of cancer patient, pain relief as well as the management of a range of psychiatric problems. This is a resource that we have within this centre and which is probably not being adequately tapped and which could be better utilised in the management of our patients.”
Minister Cassar noted that the co-operation in the treatment of patients formed the basis of the discussions in Beijing and Nanjing in September and as well as the subject of the discussions held during a meeting at the Ministry for Health in the morning. He said that it is very opportune that we are celebrating the re-opening of the centre after refurbishment so soon after renewing our political commitment to further the co-operation between the two ministries and our commitment to the further enhance the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the management of our patients.
Joe Cassar thanked the Chinese government for covering a large proportion of the expenses incurred in bringing the centre to such high standards for the benefit of our clients. He said that this is yet another milestone in the growth of the centre.
